Singning dunes (1 day)

1 day

4 km

30 people

The singing dune on the territory of the Altyn-Emel reserve is one of the most unique natural phenomena, 1.5 km long and up to 120 m high.

The dune has the shape of a crescent, which makes its beauty unique. When the wind blows from the west, dispersing the sands, one gets the feeling that an organ is playing in the heart of the desert. Until now, this phenomenon remains a mystery of nature, but scientists suggest that in dry, hot weather, sand is electrified by friction and creates a certain sound vibration. No one who has ever heard the singing of a dune will ever forget this phenomenon.

However, the uniqueness of the dune lies not only in the fact that it "sings". It is also considered rare that the dune was formed in the area among the stone mountains. The reason is the blowing of sand from the shallows of the Ili River during strong winds that raise sand dust from the river shallows. At the Big and Small Kalkans, which stand at a slight angle to each other, the sand, driven by the winds, hits a stone ridge and, settling, forms layers. For many centuries, a huge sandy mountain has grown, which has remained motionless for several millennia.
